Toughest part about learning the Packers defense?
Juwan Simpson thinks it's the terminology.
"Football is football. You really can't change that," Simpson said during last month's organized team activities. "But people call it different things, and that can confuse you."
Eight of the 20 rookies on the Packers roster play defense. Five of them -- ends Larry Birdine and DeVon Hicks, tackle Daniel Muir, and linebackers Simpson and Rory Johnson -- were undrafted.
Coaches installed the entire offensive and defensive schemes over seven weeks in May and June, giving the new guys a significant amount to retain until they return to the practice field later this month. Undrafted players in particular have minimal room for mental error, and most are playing in a more complicated, disciplined system than they were accustomed to in college. Reacting instantly to calls, shifts and audibles can be a stiff challenge.
"Everybody here is athletes," Simpson said. "It's not about you being a better athlete than the next man. It’s really about knowing what to do at all times." Courtesy of Green Bay Press Gazette |
